Unconventional bridal trends for the unique, modern bride

UNCONVENTIONAL WEDDING DRESS STYLES THAT ARE STILL BRIDAL

Every bride is unique and has her own personality that should be reflected in her bridal gown. But quite often, brides that have a rebellious take on fashion and march to the beat of their own drum get overlooked in the bridal industry. If you’re the type of bride that loves fashion and has your sights set on a daring and amazingly unconventional bridal look for your big day but are unsure of where to start, we’ve got you covered.

We’ll list some of the hottest unconventional bridal trends and offer up tips for finding your bridal style and shopping for a unique dress.

FINDING YOUR BRIDAL STYLE

Think long and hard on what makes youfeel most comfortable or beautiful. Don’t let the opinions of others sway you into choosing something that just isn’t you.

Scour the internet and Pinterest for bridal looks that resonate with you and keep tabs on designers that stand out to you. When it comes time to shop, look for bridal boutiques that have gowns from the designers on your list and don’t be afraid to ask if they carry particular style beforehand. Some bridal boutiques may not carry as many unique, fashion-forward gowns, so it’s important to ask around until you find a boutique that is a good fit for what you are looking for.

STAND OUT WITH THESE UNIQUE BRIDAL TRENDS THAT CELEBRITIES LOVE

SHORT DRESSES

Nothing screams life of the party like a stunning short dress. If gowns just aren’t your cup of tea and you’d like a more laid back bridal style, look at the idea of a short or even a high-low bridal dress.

If a bridal boutique doesn’t have a wide selection of shorter options, keep in mind that most gowns can be altered into a short and sassy dress.

Celebrity Inspo: Natalie Portman, Kiera Knightly, Maren Morris, Whitney Port

A POP OF COLOUR

Whether it’s a soft accent of colour on your dress like blush or pale blue, or you want to go full out in a bright pink or red hue, a coloured dress will ensure your personality truly shines.

Celebrity Inspo: Jessica Biel, Gwen Stefani, Mandy Moore

OUT OF THE BOX ACCESSORIES

Whether it’s an extravagant, ornate headpiece, flower crown, or a statement necklace, accessories add tons of personality. They have the power to completely transform your bridal gown into a look that’s all your own.

Celebrity Inspo: Anne Hathaway, Miranda Kerr, Dianna Agron

JUMPSUITS

If you’ve never really been a dress person and feel way more comfortable in pants than anything else, why not try a bridal jumpsuit? A jumpsuit is still very feminine and bridal while being incredibly chic and modern.

Celebrity Inspo: Solange, Sophie Turner, Kaley Cuoco

TWO-PIECE GOWNS

If you’re going for a more chill, laid back vibe but still want to look fashion-forward and sexy, two-piece gowns can be a great option.

Celebrity Inspo: Olivia Palermo, Samira Wiley, Hayley Paige

CAPES

Oh so dramatic and fashion-forward, a stunning cape will ensure your grand entrance is truly show-stopping. While still considered ‘untraditional,’ capes have surged in popularity and have made a mark on red carpets and at weddings in recent years.

If you’ve already found your gown but are interested in adding a cape, talk to your seamstress to see if it’s possible to custom make a cape to match your gown.

Celebrity Inspo: Kaley Cuoco, Serena Williams, Chanel Iman

BOLD FLORALS

If a pop of colour isn’t bold enough, why not push the envelope even further? Try a vivid floral print or stunning three-dimensional floral detailing. Florals are one trend that never goes out of style and is perfect for a spring wedding.

Celebrity Inspo: Poppy Delevingne, Miranda Kerr, Kaley Cuoco

DRAMATIC SLEEVES

Looking to feel a bit more covered but aren’t interested in anything conservative? A gown with statement sleeves that have tons of volume or stunning details will ensure you stand out and bring plenty of drama.

Celebrity Inspo: Ciara, Heidi Klum, Sophie Turner

OTHER OPTIONS TO CONSIDER

Besides the styles mentioned above, gowns that have the following features are also great options if you are looking for a unique, dramatic gown without straying too far outside of the box:

  • Feathers
  • Tiered ruffles
  • Unexpected details
  • Dramatic beading
  • One-shoulder necklines
  • Unique back detailing
  • High-low hemline
  • High necklines
  • Plunging necklines
  • Unique bead pattern
  • Fringe

SHOPPING TIPS FOR FINDING AN UNCONVENTIONAL BRIDAL GOWN

BRING AN ENTOURAGE THAT SHARES YOUR VISION

If you have friends or family that you know are strongly team tradition, consider bringing a smaller entourage with you that you know are fully supportive of your vision. You may have an amazing relationship with your grandmother, but if you know that she wouldn’t be thrilled by dress choices, it could get in the way of your ability to commit to the dress of your dreams. Keeping your entourage as small as possible helps ensure your opinions don’t get lost and overshadowed.

CALL THE BRIDAL SHOP AHEAD OF TIME

While most bridal shops will have lots of different options for you to try, if you have your heart set on a particular style that you know isn’t very popular, call the boutique ahead of your appointment and ask what their selection is like for more unconventional bridal gowns.

BE OPEN TO CUSTOMIZATION

Can’t seem to find a dress that meets your exact vision? Remember that alterations are your best friend! There are so many different ways a dress can be transformed with alterations. So don’t fret if you’re struggling to find the perfect gown. Ask your bridal stylist if certain gowns can be altered.

STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF

At the end of the day, the only opinion that matters is your own. Your wedding day is one of the most special days of your life. So it’s important that you not only feel beautiful, but comfortable in your own skin. If a dress that is more dramatic and fashion-forward than soft and traditional makes you feel this way, then that is the dress you should have.

The different types of undergarments to wear under your wedding dress

SOLVING COMMON BRIDAL UNDERGARMENT DILEMMAS

With so much focus on finding your dream wedding gown, we often forget about what we need to wear underneath the dress – which is almost as important! To help you you choose the right bridal undergarments that will give you the perfect silhouette on your wedding day, we’ll provide solutions to common undergarment dilemmas and offer tips for finding the perfect bridal undergarments.

THE IMPORTANCE OF WEARING THE RIGHT BRIDAL UNDERGARMENTS UNDER YOUR GOWN

Undergarments may seem like an afterthought, but they really are important. They have the power to completely alter your silhouette, provide support when needed, and help you look your absolute best in your gown.

Most brides imagine themselves wearing a beautiful lingerie set under their wedding dress, however, something more comfortable and practical that will give you a streamlined silhouette and won’t show under your gown is often a better way to go.

COMMON UNDERGARMENT DILEMMAS

DO I NEED TO WEAR A BRA?

We hear this question a lot. Whether there are concerns of modesty or needing support, the question of whether to wear a bra with your wedding dress is an incredibly common dilemma for brides.

The beauty of wedding dresses is that in most cases, you do not need to wear a bra. Many dresses are designed with built-in cups or can be customized during alterations to add more support. This is great for dresses that are low cut and/or backless that would not be able to hide a bra.

However, that’s not to say that you can’t wear a bra under your gown. If you feel you need the extra support and your dress will conceal a bra, then you can absolutely wear one. It’s all about finding what makes you feel most comfortable.

YOU WANT A SMOOTHER SILHOUETTE IN A FITTED GOWN

While many fitted gowns are structured to create a beautiful silhouette, you may find that you’d like things smoothed out a bit more. In this case, shapewear or seamless nude underwear can help smooth everything out so there are no bumps or visible panty lines.

TYPES OF BRIDAL UNDERGARMENTS TO CONSIDER

SHAPEWEAR

If you’ve chosen a fitted gown, shapewear is a great way to ensure everything is smooth and seamless.

If your dress is snug around your hips and thighs, look for shapewear that starts at your natural waist and extends just above the knees.

Just remember that if you do decide to wear shapewear under your gown, you will need to bring it with you to every fitting as it can have a significant impact on the fit of your dress.

SLIP

If your dress is slightly sheer or slinky, a slip will provide a smooth canvas and ensure no undergarments are showing.

CORSET

If your dress doesn’t have a built-in corset, but you’d like to get the cinched in effect that one provides, a custom-fitted corset is a great way to achieve the silhouette that you want. However, also keep in mind that comfort is incredibly important on your wedding day and that you don’t want anything standing in the way of enjoying your wedding and dancing the night away.

LINGERIE

If you’ve had your heart set on a beautiful piece of lingerie for your wedding night, that’s okay too. Just be sure that it’s in a lighter colour so that it won’t be visible and detract away from your beautiful dress. Try to stay away from black, red, or bright colours unless you’ve gone with a non-traditional coloured gown.

BACKLESS BRA

If you’re wearing a backless dress but need more support than just cups alone can offer, there are backless bras on the market that can help.

SEAMLESS NUDE UNDERWEAR

Every bride needs a great pair of seamless nude underwear that will appear invisible under your wedding dress. We promise you’ll thank us later.

TIPS FOR FINDING THE RIGHT UNDERGARMENTS

ASK YOUR BRIDAL STYLIST

When shopping for your wedding dress, don’t be afraid to ask your bridal stylist what types of undergarments you may need for a particular dress. Your stylist will know which dresses have elements like built-in corsets or cups, and which ones can be customized during alterations.

BRING YOUR UNDERGARMENTS TO DRESS SHOPPING AND FITTINGS

If you have a good idea of the style of dresses you’ll be trying on and know what type of undergarments you will need, bring these to your initial shopping appointment and all subsequent fittings. This includes nude underwear, a strapless nude bra, or shapewear if you plan to wear it.

GET PROFESSIONALLY FITTED

Around 80% of women wear the incorrect bra size, so if you do plan to wear a bra under your wedding dress, be sure to get properly fitted at a lingerie store so that it not only fits perfectly but is comfortable and looks great under your dress.

FACTOR IN COMFORT

While every bride wants to look beautiful on their wedding day, it’s also important that you are comfortable as well. Throughout your wedding day, you will be on your feet a lot, from walking down the aisle to greeting guests, dancing, and eating. So, you want to make sure that you are going to enjoy the festivities, and not spend the whole night feeling miserable and uncomfortable. Make sure that your undergarments aren’t too tight and constricting and allow you to sit and move around comfortably.

The takeaway here is that wedding dresses and undergarments go hand in hand, so it’s important to factor this in when shopping for gowns and planning your head-to-toe bridal look. When in doubt, plan for comfort and practicality. And of course, ask your bridal stylist for recommendations. Because with the right pair of undergarments, your bridal look will come together flawlessly, so you can feel nothing but confident while walking down the aisle.

Understanding the most common wedding dress styles and silhouettes

HOW TO DETERMINE WHICH WEDDING DRESS STYLES BEST SUIT YOU

Wedding dress shopping is tricky enough, but when you aren’t sure of what dress styles or silhouettes you want for your big day, it can start to make your head spin.

From romantic to vintage, boho, and classic, there are so many styles of bridal gowns on the market, but what do they all mean, and how do you know which one lines up with your personal style?

To help give you a better understanding of wedding dress styles and silhouettes, we’ll explain the most common bridal styles and provide tips to help you determine what your bridal style is.

THE MOST COMMON WEDDING DRESS STYLES DEFINED

BOHEMIAN

Relaxed and flowy, and a little bit sexy, boho gowns are a perfect fit for carefree brides looking for something airy and comfortable yet funky and non-traditional.

Recommended Designers: All Who Wander, Essence of Australia

ROMANTIC

Do you dream of lace, sweetheart necklines and flowy tulle skirts? A romantic style gown may be perfect for you. Romantic gowns are sweet and elegant while still being princessy and glamourous, without too much sparkle and drama.

Recommended Designers: Essence of Australia, Stella York, and Christina Wu

PRINCESS

Whether it’s a huge ball gown or a fitted dress with a dramatic overskirt, princess gowns have one thing in common: luxurious fabrics, big skirts, intricate beading, and romantic glamour. With a big, glittering ball gown, you can make all your fairy tale dreams come true.

Recommended Designers: Eddy K, Stella York, Christina Wu

CLASSIC & ELEGANT

Classic gowns are simple and elegant, with clean, crisp silhouettes, and buttery fabrics like satin and silk. Rather than beaded, shimmering fabrics and big skirts, a classic style favours more understated, elegant silhouettes so that all eyes are on you, and not just your gown. Think old Hollywood glamour and timeless beauty.

Recommended Designers: Stella York, Eva Lendel

SEXY

Show off your curves in a daring, sexy wedding dress with sheer fabric, a figure-hugging silhouette, and plunging neckline. Whether you decide to go all out with a sparkling beaded number or choose a more understated style, you’re bound to turn heads and feel unbelievably confident in a sexier gown.

Recommended Designers: Essence of Australia, Wonà Concept

VINTAGE

Do you feel like you were born in the wrong era and dream of open keyhole backs, soft lace, pearls, and classic sleeves? A vintage-inspired gown may be for you.

Vintage style gowns are typically lace and come in a flowy A-line or more fitted silhouette. Think of them as a modern take on your grandmother’s wedding dress.

Recommended Designers: Eddy K, Essence of Australia

EDGY

The opposite of a princess gown, edgy dresses are fashion-forward styles that are anything but traditional. More reminiscent of a red carpet gown than your traditional white wedding dress, an edgy style is perfect for a bride who likes to take risks and doesn’t play by the rules.

From unique beading, funky patterns, and even coloured fabrics, don’t be afraid to take risks and stay true to yourself on your wedding day.

Recommended Designers: Tesoro, Eva Lendel

MODEST

While there’s nothing wrong with showing off your curves and rocking a sexy gown on your wedding day, if you’re more of a traditional bride and would rather keep things under wraps for your future spouse, you may want to consider some more modest dress styles.

Whether it’s choosing an already modest gown or making some changes through alterations, there are plenty of modest options available to help bring your vision to life.

Recommended Designers: Christina Wu, Stella York

EXTRAVAGANT/GLAMOUROUS

Similar to princess, but a bit less traditional, extravagant gowns can come in any silhouette, but tend to have one thing in common: sparkle, sparkle, and more sparkle!

With luxurious beading, shimmering fabrics, and extra-long trains, you’ll be the center of attention on your big day.

Recommended Designers: Wonà Concept, Tesoro, Eva Lendel

NON-TRADITIONAL/FASHION-FORWARD

Similar to edgy, but with little to no semblance of a traditional bride, a non-traditional bridal look is completely out of the box. From coloured fabrics and dramatic sleeves to short dresses, capes, or even a jumpsuit or romper, the possibilities are endless.

Recommended Designers: Tesoro, Eva Lendel

BEACHY

Planning a small, intimate destination wedding and don’t want to feel weighed down on the beach? A simple and flowy beachy gown might be the perfect fit.

Whether it’s a light and airy lace and tulle boho dress or a dreamy Grecian goddess inspired gown, you’ll look stunning and feel comfortable in whatever beachy style you choose.

Recommended Designers: All Who Wander

WEDDING DRESS SILHOUETTES

Besides wedding dress styles, there are many different silhouettes to consider. Here are some of the most common silhouettes you will come across when shopping for your bridal gown.

MERMAID/FIT AND FLARE

One of the most popular silhouettes, mermaid and fit and flare gowns hug your body and flare out at the bottom. They can either be simple at the bottom or have plenty of drama.

This type of silhouette is incredibly flattering on many body types, whether you are looking for a gown to flatter your curves or give the illusion of an hourglass shape.

TRUMPET

If a mermaid or fit and flare are too figure-hugging for your taste, but you still want something fitted with a bit of drama, a trumpet silhouette may be the perfect solution.

Fitted through the bust, waist, and hips and flaring out between your hips and knees, a trumpet silhouette highlights your figure without being too fitted and dramatic.

COLUMN

A column gown is sleek and streamlined, skimming straight down your body to create a fitted yet flowy silhouette.

SHEATH

Similar to column, a sheath gown allows you to show off your figure without any bells and whistles. With a slim silhouette that gently hugs your body and falls straight to the floor, a sheath gown is a great way to rock a fitted gown without showing off too much.

BALL GOWN

Fitted until your natural waist or hips and then flaring out dramatically into a large, full skirt, a ball gown allows you to feel like a true princess for a day.

A-LINE

Similar to a ball gown but with less volume in the skirt, an A-line dress is dreamy and airy. Allowing you to float down the aisle and move around comfortably, while still feeling like a princess.

Now that you have an understanding of the different dress styles and silhouettes, you’re well on your way to solidifying your bridal vision and start shopping for your perfect gown. Just remember to stay true to yourself, because no matter what gown you choose, you are going to look stunning as you walk down the aisle.

Covid-19 and Sinders Bridal House

After a lot of thought and consideration, we have decided to make the difficult decision to temporarily close our shop to help prevent the further spread of Covid-19.

We are available to all our brides by email or DM to answer any questions. Always. When our doors are open or closed. Our team is still working behind the scenes to make sure the shop continues and all our amazing brides receive their gowns on time!

We will always be reachable and we will continue to post updates on social media and will be sure to keep you all informed when we feel it is safe to re-open.

Stay safe and healthy everyone! We look forward to seeing you back at Sinders again soon once this Covid-19 crisis has passed.

– Meghan and Stacey

A Letter from The Sinders Sisters:

It’s April 2020 and it’s an unprecedented time for us. That word can be used to describe either a good or bad change. I won’t lie, it’s been both.

Never in our history of entrepreneurship have we ever had to close the doors to our shop. Never have we had to tell our staff that they can’t come to work and we don’t know when we’ll be back. When we say we’re a family, I can promise you it’s not just lip service in an industry that supports love.

There are individuals that are harder hit by Covid-19 than us, I can absolutely admit. We have every intention of opening our doors and welcoming back our staff at the earliest opportunity, but what has this time changed for us? What has it done to our familiar work-home? We closed our doors and the building is cold. One of us goes every day to be in touch with brides and make sure that everything is safe inside. But there’s no laughter from the staff to keep us company. There’s no cheering and excitement from one of our bridal suites when a bride finds her gown. There’s no hustle and bustle of making a dream come true and keeping the company rhythm flowing. And it just feels wrong.

We’ve been in the wedding industry for over 20 years. Every day has happiness and often craziness as well. Saying you become addicted to the happiness high probably isn’t far from the truth! And when it’s missing I never realized how hard we would feel it’s absence. We miss you. Of course we do. We miss the calls and the questions. We miss our girls every single day. Group chats keep us in touch. But physical separation when we’ve been together for so long. It’s not something we ever thought we’d have to deal with.

I tell you this, and if you don’t believe me, I’ll explain. I’ve had three stints in the hospital – two when I delivered my babies, and one for abdominal surgery. The women I call my friends and family at work held my babies at 2-3 days old because I left the hospital and stopped at work before going to my actual home. For the surgery, I was in the hospital for a week, which made me stir crazy despite the drugs. But still, I was back the following week. Even if my capabilities were extremely limited. Because I didn’t know what to do with myself otherwise.

We’re addicted. No joke. To the laughter, the love, the happiness that exudes from our building. You can feel it when you walk in the doors, it’s like a muscle memory for a house. You open the door and walk into a place that 15 women call their home, where we take care of each other when you need a shoulder, and celebrate when life hits a high note.

So how has a global Covid-19 pandemic affected us? It left a hole in our hearts. But it also gave us perspective. It gave us incredible time with our families. It gave us a break we would never have taken on our own. And sometimes, the separation is necessary to know that when we open the doors again, we absolutely do what we do for love. To fill happiness in others at a time they’ll need calm support and also unbridled excitement. To nurture love that you can almost physically touch.

From the bottom of our hearts – we can’t wait to see you again.

Post-wedding Checklist: Everything you need to do after saying “I do”

WHAT TO INCLUDE ON YOUR POST-WEDDING CHECKLIST

You’ve said the I dos and danced the night away. Yet, before you can be whisked off on your honeymoon and live happily ever after, there are some important tasks that need to be taken care of. Like a post-wedding checklist!

Since you’ll likely be caught up in post-wedded bliss after your wedding, we’ve made this process a bit easier by providing a breakdown of everything that should be on your to-do list after your wedding. Along with timelines for when these tasks should ideally be taken care of.

THE DAY AFTER

SLEEP!!!

It’s no secret that planning and executing a wedding is exhausting. As the adrenaline wears off and reality sinks in, you’re going to be pretty tired by the end. I mean, unless you have some sort of superhuman powers (or just lots of coffee). So, carve out a bit of time for self-care and let yourself sleep in the morning after your wedding. You deserve it!

HOST A POST WEDDING BRUNCH

This isn’t mandatory, but it’s a great way to get together for one last hurrah. You can reminisce about the night before, and thank your guests. Especially if you have a lot of out of town guests or had a destination wedding.

It doesn’t have to be anything fancy or have your entire guestlist in attendance. Just gather your close friends and immediate family, along with any out of town guests for a casual sit-down or buffet brunch and toast to your new life as a married couple.

PACK UP ITEMS AT THE VENUE

If your venue doesn’t offer onsite accommodations, you’ll need to head back over the next morning to gather all your décor and decide what to do with it.

Whether you sell them, keep them as mementos, or decide to get rid of them, that’s completely up to you.

READ MORE: The 15 Most Important Questions to Ask Your Wedding Venue Before You Book

DONATE YOUR FLOWERS

Again, this one isn’t mandatory, but is a great way to do some good with your flowers that would have otherwise been thrown out. But you might be wondering, how and why would you donate flowers?

There are many organizations that collect wedding flowers and turn them into beautiful bouquets. These bouquets are then brought to hospitals or seniors’ homes to lift the spirits of residents and patients. So, not only will your wedding flowers bring you joy on your special day but will be used to bring a smile to someone else’s face who may be going through a hard time. How sweet is that?

If this is something you are interested in, do some research! Find an organization that will either pick-up or allow you to drop off your flowers to them right after the wedding.

RETURN YOUR RENTAL ITEMS

If you rented any equipment, décor, furniture, a tent, dancefloor, or other items for your wedding, these will have to be returned to the vendor, either the next day or whenever was specified in your contract.

Be sure to look over your rental contracts to find out whether the vendor will be picking up the items and handling the takedown, or if you need to take care of these tasks yourself.

3 DAYS TO 1 WEEK AFTER

GO ON YOUR HONEYMOON

For couples lucky enough to jet off on your honeymoon immediately after the wedding, this is a great opportunity to extend your post-nuptial bliss and escape from reality for just a little while longer.

However, many couples also choose to delay their honeymoon to save up a bit more for a big trip either several months or even one year after their wedding. If this is what you have planned, then you can skip to the next step.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR GOWN

If you are planning to hold onto your wedding dress to serve as a reminder of the love, happiness, and jubilation that you experienced on your wedding day, it’s important to have it professionally dry cleaned and stored to preserve its beauty for years to come.

This should be done shortly after your wedding (ideally one week after) so that any stains can be swiftly removed. And if you think you can skip this step as you managed to keep your gown stain-free on your wedding day, keep in mind that some stains can be invisible at first, but will turn brown over time and create a lasting stain. Therefore, having your gown professionally cleaned is always a good idea.

OPEN YOUR GIFTS AND CARDS

Once the dust has settled and you are back from your honeymoon (if you chose to take one right away), now comes the fun part – opening your gifts! There is no timeline for this. However, you likely will want to get to this soon so you can put all your gifts to good use.

While opening gifts, make sure that you write down who gifted you what. This helps with sending out thank you cards after!

3 TO 6 WEEKS AFTER

SEND OUT THANK YOU NOTES

After you’ve opened all your cards and gifts and have recorded who gifted you what, you’ll need to send out thank you notes to anyone who gave you a gift or money. A good rule of thumb is to have your thank you cards sent out within three months after your wedding. Ideally, you should get this done sooner.

This can feel like the tiring and tedious part of your post-wedding checklist at times. But getting your cards completed and sent out quickly will not only show your guests how much you appreciate their generous gift, but will also free up time on your end so you can focus on enjoying married life.

REVIEW YOUR VENDORS

It takes a village – and a lot of vendors – to pull off a wedding. So be sure to show your appreciation for all the vendors that helped make your wedding special by writing favourable reviews. Often vendors will ask you for a review directly. Even if they don’t. Still reach out and ask them what the best way is for you to provide a review.

This not only helps the vendors to book future weddings, but also helps other couples looking for vendors to make their big day magical as well.

CHANGE YOUR NAME (IF YOU’RE PLANNING TO)

If you’re planning to change or hyphenate your last name, start working on this within the first couple of months after your wedding. This can be a lengthy process. If you’re keeping your last name, then you can just sit back, relax, and skip to the next part.

ENJOY MARRIED LIFE!

This is the final and most important part of your post-wedding checklist. Planning a wedding is a huge endeavour that involves a lot of moving parts. But the days and weeks after the wedding can be equally as stressful. For this reason, it’s so important to remember to take time to relax and enjoy being married.

We’re going to go out on a limb and assume that you didn’t have a wedding just for the party. You had a wedding to celebrate your love and be joined together with your new spouse for life. So take time to reflect on your big day and soak everything in. And don’t stress too much about taking care of all the little things after your wedding.

There you have it – your post-wedding checklist!

Wedding dress shopping tips for moms-to-be!

HOW YOU CAN FIND YOUR PERFECT BRIDAL GOWN WHILE PREGNANT

First comes love then comes…baby? For brides who are pregnant leading up to their wedding day, this can be such an incredibly exciting time as you are accomplishing two major milestones at once. If you’re looking for wedding dress shopping tips for moms-to-be, you’ve come to the right place!

Because at the same time, wedding dress shopping for your dream gown to wear on your big day can be a bit of a challenge. Not only is your body is constantly changing, but dresses typically need to be ordered months in advance, which requires a bit of guesswork when it comes to imagining how the dress will look closer to your wedding day.

Fortunately, our bridal experts are highly experienced in working with all kinds of brides and can help you find the perfect dress that accommodates your baby bump while still making you feel like your most beautiful self. With that being said, here are our wedding dress shopping tips for moms-to-be that will help you find your perfect gown with ease.

DRESS SHOPPING TIPS FOR MOMS-TO-BE

START YOUR SEARCH EARLY

Whether you are planning to tie the knot before or after you give birth, it’s important to start your search as early as possible.

The standard recommendation is to start looking for dresses eight to 12 months before your wedding. Since most gowns will need to be special ordered and often take up to 6 months to arrive, this will give you enough time to not only find a gown, but ensure it arrives before your wedding day with enough time for alterations.

And if you are planning on waiting until after you give birth to get married, try to schedule your appointment earlier in your pregnancy if you can, so you can best envision how you will look in the gown on your big day.

TELL THE BRIDAL SHOP YOU ARE PREGNANT WHEN BOOKING YOUR APPOINTMENT

When booking an appointment to shop for wedding dresses, we tend to ask lots of questions to learn more about you, so we can best prepare for your appointment and find your perfect gown. Which is why it’s important that you let us know if you are pregnant, so we can give you lots of options when it comes to flattering fabrics and silhouettes that will accommodate your growing bump.

TIME YOUR ALTERATIONS

It’s no secret that your body changes throughout pregnancy, which means your dress will have to as well. Fortunately, you have lots of options when it comes to alterations, from a corset back to side seam or panel.

The general rule of thumb is to add one inch for each remaining month of pregnancy until your wedding day.

But because nothing is certain, time your alterations closer to your big day. Then the seamstress can alter your gown to your body to best ensure a perfect fit on your wedding day.

DECIDE WHETHER YOU WANT TO CONCEAL OR SHOW OFF YOUR BUMP

For any bride, it’s important to have a vision of what you want to look like. Plus have an idea of what kind of silhouette you want on your wedding day.

When you are pregnant, this means deciding early. Do you want a flowy gown that will cleverly conceal your bump? Or a more fitted dress that shows off your figure and your bump.

Deciding on what look you are hoping to achieve will help you immensely when shopping. Plus it will help you and your bridal stylist find your perfect gown more easily.

DON’T LIMIT YOURSELF TO CERTAIN STYLES – TRY ON DIFFERENT SILHOUETTES

Often, we feel we need to conceal a baby bump, but that doesn’t always need to be the case.

If you’ve always dreamed of a sexier fit and flare gown, don’t feel you need to avoid this style because you are pregnant. At the end of the day, it’s important to find a gown that makes you feel most confident and beautiful. So, don’t be afraid to break the mold and wear something that highlights your bump. Just be sure to avoid stiffer fabrics like satin or taffeta, and instead look for a fabric that has a bit of stretch to it.

Your bridal stylist can recommend fabrics that will be the most comfortable.

Because contrary to what you may have heard, pregnancy doesn’t limit you to drapey goddess style dresses or poufy ball gowns that hide your figure.

WHEN IN DOUBT, SIZE UP!

If you are on the fence about which size will best fit your body in 6+ months, it’s best to follow the golden rule by always, always, ALWAYS sizing up.

Remember, it’s much easier to alter a larger gown to fit smaller than it is to make a too-small gown larger.

FACTOR IN COMFORT

It’s no secret that women’s bodies go through a lot during pregnancy. We’re basically superheroes! But that doesn’t mean you need to tough it out on your wedding day and sacrifice comfort to look beautiful.

Remember that you will be wearing your bridal gown for many hours. It’s important that you not only look your best, but you feel it too.

Be sure to ask your bridal stylist about which fabrics and silhouettes will be most comfortable. Or, consider purchasing a second, more comfortable gown to change into for the reception.

No matter what style or silhouette you go with, and what stage of pregnancy (or postpartum) you’re in when you get married, the most important thing is that you look and feel like your most beautiful self and that you radiate joy and beauty.

So, don’t worry about finding a gown you feel is appropriate. Focus on wearing what makes you happy and will help create perfect memories of your big day.

That’s a wrap! Thanks for checking in on our wedding dress shopping tips for moms-to-be!

1. PLAN AHEAD

Before you head out to start shopping for your plus-sized wedding dress, it’s important to get organized and find out which bridal shops carry dresses for you. Start by finding bridal shops in your area online, and call them to discover whether they have a good selection of plus-sized gowns. While plus-sized wedding dress stores may seem plentiful online, phoning ahead will give you the opportunity to ask about inventory in your size before you walk in.

If you’re looking for a specific wedding-dress style or brand, you can narrow down your search with a few phone calls, but remember, while it’s great to have an idea in mind, it’s best to be open-minded when it comes to wedding dress styles.

2. WORK WITH A BRIDAL SPECIALIST

At Sinders, we have an entire team of wedding gown experts who can work with you on your plus-sized wedding dress ideas. We can show you flattering styles for your figure as well as the hottest trends in wedding dresses this year. We’ll get you to explore different gown styles, find the best fit for you, and help you stay within your wedding budget as you prepare for your special day.

3. HAVE A REALISTIC BUDGET

To help you prep for the right amount in your budget, you can search for pricing online to get a rough estimate. You can also consult with our team to get a realistic budget for your perfect wedding dress.

4. ESCAPE YOUR COMFORT ZONE

Don’t get boxed into one wedding-dress style at the beginning of your search. Step out of your comfort zone and try on a variety of wedding dresses. You may not realize that you like lace in your wedding gown before you try on a plus-size lace wedding dress.

5. KNOW THE MOST FLATTERING STYLES FOR YOUR BODY

Not every wedding dress style flatters every bride. The shape, length, style, and materials of your dress can accentuate your best features or drown you out. Determine your best look by trying on a variety of styles. These styles listed below are often the favourites among plus-size brides. They create a gorgeous, flattering silhouette and boost your confidence!

  • A-Line Dress
  • Empire Waist Dress
  • Trumpet Dress
  • Column Dress
  • Dropped Waist or Mermaid Dress
  • Wrap-Style Dress with Bell Sleeves

6. CUSTOMIZE YOUR WEDDING GOWN

While you might find a bargain by buying off-the-rack, customizing your gown will give you the satisfaction of having a perfectly-fitted wedding dress that is comfortable and makes you look radiant. Whether you’re on the hunt for the best wedding dresses for short plus-size brides or you just want a more conservative fit that makes you feel completely comfortable on your wedding day, alterations to customize your gown is the answer. Remember to give yourself enough time to allow for custom alterations.

7. SPLURGE ON FLATTERING LINGERIE

One of the most crucial elements that helps you achieve the perfect fit are wedding dress undergarments. Discuss your options with your bridal stylist. At Sinders, we have the expert knowledge to help you pick from a selection of plus-size lingerie and shapewear to keep everything in place and offer optimal comfort while you wear your wedding gown.

8. DON’T WAIT TO SHOP UNTIL YOU’RE THE “PERFECT SIZE”

Most brides decide they want to lose weight or get in shape before their wedding day. Be realistic with your goals and remember that your dress can be altered closer to your wedding day. Remain confident in your body and know that there’s a perfect dress for you that will make you feel absolutely radiant on your wedding day, no matter what size!

9. MAKE YOUR COMFORT A PRIORITY

There are a few reasons to say “no” to a wedding dress. Remember that you will be wearing your wedding gown for several hours, so take a pass on any dress that isn’t completely comfortable. If your best friend loves a dress but you’re feeling pinched or borderline uncomfortable and can’t move around easily, follow your instincts!

Get a dress that you can dance all night in and that makes you feel confident and excited. It’s YOUR wedding day, after all. Get the dress that fits your budget, is the right size, and makes you feel fantastic while wearing it.

10. MAKE THE MOST OUT OF YOUR SHOPPING EXPERIENCE

Take the time to sit back, breathe, and enjoy your wedding dress shopping experience. Relax and keep a list of your “must-haves” in mind. If you allow enough time to search, find and alter your perfect wedding gown, you will love your look and fit.

Wedding dress fitting: the final details

WHAT TO EXPECT AND PLAN FOR DURING YOUR FINAL FITTING – AND WHAT COMES NEXT!

By this point, you’ve likely already made a few trips to your local bridal boutique for careful fittings, alterations, and more dress fittings.

Now, though, the end is in sight, and the big day is fast approaching!

As your big day nears, it’s time to get ready for your final fitting, the last round of measurements and modifications before you wear your dress on your wedding day.

The final wedding dress fitting is likely not too far from your wedding date to better ensure a perfect fit for when you walk down the aisle.

And, in all likelihood, you’ve probably got a million other things on your mind. The last thing you want to worry about is yet another fitting!

All the same, taking the time to visit your bridal boutique in Ottawa and seamstress will help you to relax and guarantee that perfect fit.

Not sure what to expect? Don’t worry. Read on to find out more about your final wedding dress fitting, what to look for in the fit of your dress, and what comes next!

WHAT DOES A GOOD FIT FEEL LIKE?

At your final fitting, think Goldilocks: your dress should fit just right.

It shouldn’t be too tight, but neither should it be too loose. Take some time to move around, practice walking down the aisle, and consider a few (gentle) dance moves!

Think of everything you’ll be doing in the dress, and how much time you’ll be in it. You don’t want to feel restricted.

Strapless gowns should still let you bend over, hug, sit, jump, and dance without fear of slipping.

Keep an eye out for:

  • Material that pulls
  • Wrinkling
  • Bunching

Even though your expert seamstress has likely made a few key alterations by this point, this is your opportunity to find any and all issues and address them, no matter how small.

WHAT’S THE RIGHT LENGTH?

Bring your wedding shoes with you to your final wedding dress fitting and check the length of your gown with them on.

If your dress is still a bit long in your wedding shoes, don’t worry – that can be addressed. Consider bringing a pair of flats with you, too; you might want to swap heels for something more comfortable as the reception moves into the evening.

For long dresses, the bottom of the skirt should just skim the top of the front of your shoes.

Walk around to see how this feels. You don’t want your heel to get caught in the hem.

Ideally, you won’t be kicking the front or back of the dress as you walk, unless you have a long dress or train. In this case, you might opt to have a bustle added for the wedding reception.

WHAT’S THE RIGHT NUMBER OF FITTINGS?

Ideally, and time permitting, you will have three wedding dress fittings. These fittings should be scheduled at the moment you buy your dress from wedding dress stores in Ottawa.

Remember to bring the wedding accessories you plan to wear on your big day, including any undergarments or unique items you’d like to feature.

These are especially important for your final fitting to ensure everything works in concert perfectly.

As to when you should schedule your wedding dress fitting…

THE FIRST FITTING – 3 MONTHS BEFORE YOUR WEDDING

Your dress likely won’t fit well when you first try it on. This is when your seamstress will take note of the alterations needed.

THE SECOND FITTING – 1 MONTH BEFORE YOUR WEDDING

During the second fitting, you will see how the alterations fit, and if any other changes are needed before the final fitting.

Don’t be afraid to speak up and ask for more alterations if you don’t feel 100% comfortable with your dress.

THE FINAL FITTING – TWO WEEKS BEFORE YOUR WEDDING

This is when you get to see the final product!

While you probably won’t need more alterations at this point, this is your last chance to request them.

If your final fitting goes well, then you get to take your dress home that day!

BUDGETING FOR ALTERATIONS

For your wedding dress to fit well and look perfect on your big day, you will likely need to make some alterations. These could be as simple as adjusting the hem length and taking in the dress, or as complex as adding a bustle and altering the neckline.

Whatever alterations you need, make sure to account for them in your total budget.

The easiest way to account for alterations in your budget is by using an in-house seamstress at your bridal boutique.

Keeping your dress alterations in-house ensures a seamless experience (pardon the pun) from the day you find your wedding dress to the day you take it home, while sticking to your timeline.

THE RIGHT PEOPLE AND ATTITUDE

We’ve discussed this before, but it bears repeating: bring one or two close people to your final fitting.

This isn’t a shopping experience, after all.

Bring your maid of honour and/or your mother. They’ll gladly offer advice, support, and help you dress and style everything perfectly.

Bring your mom and/or maid of honour for advice, support, and to learn how to help you put on and bustle your dress. An extra set of hands can help with complicated buttons, tricky bustles, and other fasteners.

Alternatively, you can hire a dressing service on the day of your wedding to get your seamstress to help you into the dress to ensure everything’s perfect.

Remember to ask your seamstress questions about the appropriate care instructions for your dress. Better still, some bridal boutiques in Ottawa offer complimentary storage and steaming of your dress to ensure it looks perfect for your big day.

The days and weeks leading up to your wedding can be stressful. Don’t let your final fitting add to it! Working with an expert bridal boutique in Ottawa can help you make the most of your precious time, put your mind at ease, and help you get the perfect for your perfect day.

Getting ready for your first wedding dress fitting

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR YOUR FIRST WEDDING DRESS FITTING AT YOUR OTTAWA BRIDAL SHOP

You’ve gone shopping at wedding dress stores in Ottawa and have found your dream wedding dress. Now you need to have your first wedding dress fitting to make sure it looks perfect on your big day.

A wedding dress fitting ensures that your gown is the right size, colour, and design. Fittings help make sure everything from the neckline and sleeves to the train and hemline fit perfectly.

It also gives your seamstress a thorough understanding of what alterations need to be made.

Make sure to have a vision in mind before going to your first fitting so you can be as specific as possible about how you want your dress to look.

Once you have the dress on, your seamstress will look for where the dress needs to be taken in, let out, shortened, lengthened, and altered in any other ways.

You first fitting at your Ottawa bridal boutique should be about six to eight weeks before your wedding day. Once you’ve booked it, keep these tips in mind so you can make the most of your first wedding dress fitting.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

COMFORTABLE CLOTHES

Wear clothes and shoes that are easy to change in and out of at the bridal shop.

BRIDAL LINGERIE

Your wedding dress will fit differently depending on what you’re wearing underneath. So you should wear the same undergarments you plan to wear on your wedding day. This includes your bra, underwear, slip, garter belt, stockings, and shape-wear.

WEDDING SHOES

Bring your bridal shoes to wear while fitting your dress. If you don’t have these shoes yet, bring a pair of shoes with the same heel height as your desired wedding shoes.

The height of your shoes will affect whether the seamstress needs to adjust the hemline of your dress. You’ll also want to see how your dress looks while wearing specific shoes.

ACCESSORIES

To complete your look during your fitting, wear the jewellery, headpiece, veil, bag, and wrap you plan to wear at your wedding.

This will give you a more accurate picture of how you’ll look on your big day. It will also affect adjustments, such as how a necklace will look with the neckline.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO MY FIRST FITTING?

A NOTEBOOK AND PEN

Bring a notebook and pen to write down the alterations needed before your next fitting.

Look in mirrors to see your dress from all angles.

As your seamstress adjusts your dress, bring up specific adjustments you’d like. This should include which parts of your body you’d like to accentuate in the dress.

Keep an eye on the neckline and speak up if you want a fuller bust or not, and if you want to show more or less cleavage.

If you notice anything that you don’t like, bring it up with your seamstress as well. Your seamstress can tell you why the problem exists and how to fix it.

Don’t be afraid to speak up if you have concerns. These fittings are meant to make sure you’re completely happy with your dress on your big day.

Take note of the following details while moving around in your dress:

  • How does the dress fit while standing? Bending? Walking? Sitting? Dancing?
  • How does the fabric fall?
  • Is there any bunching, bulging, pulling, or puckering?
  • How well-sewn are the stitching, embroidery, and beading?
  • If your dress is full-length, does the hem skim the tops of your shoes or graze the floor?

Go over the desired alterations with your bridal boutique seamstress. She will give you an estimate for when the alterations will be completed. And you can schedule your next fitting appointment based on this time frame.

A CAMERA

Have your trusted companion take pictures or videos of you in the dress at various angles and while moving around. This will help you remember how you looked at your fitting and ensure you’re completely happy with your dress and overall look.

HAIR AND MAKEUP

Your hair and makeup on your wedding day will also influence how you look, which alterations make sense, and how you’ll wear your headpiece and veil.

If you plan to wear your hair down, then there’s no point in adding details to the back of your dress if your hair will only hide it. And if you plan to wear it up, make sure the veil and headpiece work.

Wear your hair up or down at your fittings, depending on how you plan to wear it on your wedding day.

Avoid wearing makeup that could easily wipe off onto your dress. If you do want to wear a bit of makeup, opt for smudge-proof eyeliner and mascara.

If you wear lipstick, eyeshadow, and foundation, you are taking a risk. You may need to clean your wedding gown before the wedding if you get makeup on it.

BRING THE RIGHT PEOPLE

As with shopping for your wedding dress, the fewer people you bring to your fitting, the better. Invite one or two trusted companions to your fittings.

These people should be honest and offer advice that you trust. While your own instincts are what matter most, also listen to what your seamstress and trusted companions have to say.

One of these special people should be the person who will help you into your dress and also bustle your gown after your wedding ceremony. This could be your mom or your maid of honour. Your seamstress will teach both of you how to fasten the dress and bustle it.

HOW MANY FITTINGS SHOULD I HAVE?

You should have a minimum of two fittings. But you might need three fittings depending on the alterations and timeline.

At your first fitting, your seamstress will determine the initial alterations that need to be made, such as taking in the dress, adding a bustle, and shortening the hemline.

Your second fitting will assess if the initial alterations fit well and determine if there are any other adjustments needed.

If the second fitting is your last fitting, it should be as close to your wedding date as possible, but with enough time for your seamstress to make any final adjustments.

Although going to bridal shops in Ottawa for multiple fittings may seem tedious, try to stay positive and be patient. These fittings are worth it to make sure your dress fits perfectly so you look stunning on your special day.

Turn heads in a sexy wedding dress

TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS FOR FINDING AND FLAUNTING SEXY WEDDING DRESSES

It’s fair to say that sexy, sensual, and even provocative wedding dresses are in. These glamourous, scintillating gowns are a popular alternative to traditional looks and styles. Showing a bit more skin and highlighting curves, a sexy wedding dress give brides an opportunity to show off their beauty, feeling desirable and confident on their big day.

Too risqué? Don’t worry, these dresses aren’t going to shock (unless that’s what you’re going for). After all, a bit of mystery goes a long way towards creating a sexy look.

If you’re not sure where to start, we’re here to help. We’ve put together a few tips to help you find a sexy dress so you look stunning on your wedding day… without ruffling any feathers.

FINDING THE DRESS

TAKE A RISK

Traditional gowns aren’t for everyone. If you feel awkward in one, don’t second-guess it. This is your big day, after all, and who knows your style better than you? That said, sometimes, to find a look that suits you, you have to be willing to take a risk and try new things.

These sexy gowns might feel a bit scandalous at first. Go with it! If you’re trying to relax and find the fun in your search, grab something that truly pushes the envelope and try it on to break the ice. While it might not be what you’re looking for, taking a chance when trying on these gowns can help you get a little more comfortable embracing your sexier side.

And who knows – you might just find something you like!

ACCENTUATE YOUR BEST FEATURES

What is your favourite part of your body? Your back, chest, rear, chest bones, legs, or heels? Find a dress that accentuates your features. Whether it’s through detailing, embroidery, a neckline, a cut, a backless dress, or a dress that hugs your curves, when you look your best, you’re going to feel your best.

DON’T FORGET THE COMFORT

The best way to look and feel sexy in a dress is by feeling comfortable. You don’t want a dress that is too tight and restricts movement while you’re dancing and greeting guests. A stiff bride that can’t move might not be the most alluring or sexy of looks, so make sure you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing – because you’re going to be wearing it all day!

MAKE SURE IT FITS

This is where fittings come in. Don’t forget – you’ve got several dress fittings leading up to your big day, and your final fitting guarantees that your dress fits perfectly.

When choosing a dress, make sure to wear the right bra for the style, and check for gaping, especially on backless dresses.

Some gowns come with padding in the bra area, but you might also want to wear a strapless, backless, or multi-way bra for added support. Silicon stick-on bras are another option for support in dresses that don’t suit regular bras.

While trying on dresses, sit down, bend forward, backwards, and side to side. Keep an eye out for fabric gaping at the sides. Although showing off some skin is sexy, side boob and nip slips might be too much.

FIND A BALANCE

While some dresses may be too sexy for you, you can find a balance between sexy and classy. A sophisticated, elegant look can be pulled off with a combination of dress, hair, makeup, and accessories. Instead of pairing dramatic hair and makeup with an ultra-sexy dress, try understated hair and makeup for a balanced look.

And remember, nothing’s sexier than confidence and leaving something to the imagination. So flaunt a dress that makes you feel amazing.

SEXY WEDDING DRESS STYLES

BACKLESS

A backless dress can be sexy and elegant, especially with a long skirt. How far down you go with the seam is up to you. The deeper the plunge, the racier the dress.

PLUNGING NECKLINE

A plunging V-shaped neckline is daring and sexy. These work well with long, form-fitting dresses, like mermaid dresses.

OFF-THE-SHOULDER NECKLINE

These necklines show off the shoulders and a modest amount of the chest and back. For some, that’s the right amount of sexy.

CROP TOP

For a fun alternative to full gowns, crop top wedding dresses show off the midriff and curves. These dresses allow for various mix and match options for the top and skirt. Long-sleeved and short-sleeved crop tops go well with long skirts. And high necklines suit these tops as well.

FIGURE-HUGGING

Sexy doesn’t have to be about showing off skin. Dresses that hug your figure, showing off your body’s silhouette are just as sexy. But if do you want to show some skin, a long form-fitting mermaid dress with a low back and neckline is elegant and seductive.

SLITS

Thigh-high slits, both single and double, have made their way to sexy wedding dresses. There are even slits that go up to the hip. How high you go is up to you. Slits are a great way to show some leg without baring all.

LACE & OPAQUE FABRICS

Barely-there or illusion panelling uses nude fabric on the bodice, giving the illusion that the bride is barely covered. Sheer panelling is also popular, using strategically-placed sequins, lace, and floral details to maintain some modest covering.

No matter how much (or how little) skin you choose to show off, you can look sexy and classy on your big day. Find a dress that makes you happy, comfortable, and confident. And if you turn heads while leaving something to the imagination, then you’ve done well finding that perfect sexy wedding dress.
