Let’s get a little more in depth on some gown styles. You’ll find lots of different jargon when talking about wedding gowns so I’ll tell you a little more about how a mermaid wedding dress is defined.
If you want the statement gown, if you want to be the centre of attention, if you want to guarantee that jaws will drop when you walk down the aisle. Then you should consider a mermaid gown.
What is a mermaid wedding dress?
As a very simple answer that will stay the same no matter who you ask – a mermaid gown has a flare at the bottom of the skirt. The gown will fit closely over your hips then flow out into a much fuller shape from your knees.
Keep in mind that I say knees but since we are all different heights there is leeway in where that line will hit you. It could be just above your knee, or just below. It’s uncommon, but some designers do make gowns that flare several inches below your knee, and while this does look extremely avant-garde and dramatic, when it’s fitted that low with a great flare on the bottom… it does make it fairly hard to walk.
What’s it like to wear a mermaid wedding dress?
In one word the mermaid wedding gown is dramatic. This style gives you the beauty of a fitted gown that will show off your shape, and even add curves if you want a little extra.
But add the volume to the bottom of the skirt and see how quickly it becomes a statement piece for you at your wedding. If you want to show off your feminine figure then absolutely the mermaid is one of the best options to try.
If drama isn’t on the top of the list for what you want at your wedding then there are slimmer styles that might suit better and still keep the fitted look.
Other things to consider about a mermaid gown are that they do restrict your movement a bit more than other fuller styles. By no means will moving be impossible, but you will have to take slightly smaller steps that you might be used to in everyday clothing. It’s a bit of the ‘fashion is beauty’ statement where you trade off a bit of your mobility to ensure that you look bomb in your gown!
How are mermaid wedding dresses made?
Other than the shape of the gown, mermaid wedding dresses can be made out of tulle (with lots of under layers for structure), satin, or mikado.
Heavier fabrics are more common for this style of gown because a sturdy structure is needed to keep the puff at your feet. Which is why you’ll find lots of mermaid gowns made with tulle but with many, many layers to give drama and to cover the under layers that give the support.
If you’re looking for even more drama with this style then you can also add a hoop or crinoline to the underskirts which will hold the layers out even more.
So, if you want the statement gown, if you want to be the centre of attention, if you want to guarantee that jaws will drop when you walk down the aisle. Then you should consider a mermaid gown.
You can create a beautiful look with any style, but you’ll already be one step ahead by choosing a figure-hugging mermaid style.
